There’s no denying it.
Cardi B has completely and utterly dominated the Hip Hop charts in 2017. In fact, she just broke a Billboard record with her Bruno Mars collab on “Finesse”.
The song quickly slid to #1 on the Hip-Hop/ R&B Chart, making her the first woman to have 5 top 10 hits at the SAME TIME.
Her other ranking songs are
- “No Limit” ( #3)
- “Motorsport” (#4)
- “Bartier Cardi” (#7)
- “Bodak Yellow” (#10)
Beyonce previously held the record with 4 songs. Sorry queen Bey, looks like there’s a new queen in town.
Speaking of Cardi’s hits, can we talk about how freaking incredible “Finesse” is?
the tune starts with an offbeat kick and snare rhythm and quickly launches into a gliding verse characterized by smooth synth pads a and funky tremelo lead line.
You can’t help but feel like Cardi B has morphed into the female Bronx version of the Fresh Prince of Bell Air in the song. Her cadence is smooth, playful- and characterized by her signature accent.
Bruno’s melody line on the chorus is irresistibly catchy and feels reminsicent of something Justin Timberlake ( or NSYNC) would have crafted.
The vibe is straight out of “In Living Color” ( The 90’s sketch comedy show)
Cardi is wearing a multi-color patchwork jacket, a shirt with an adorable yellow cyclops, a backward gold hat, some huge ass hoop earrings, and some high waist jean shorts with the ass cut out.
( And yes, she talks about her ass in her verse- we probably should have seen that coming)
Anyway, If you’re having difficulty picturing all of that- don’t worry.
that’s why we have pictures.
Bruno’s outfit is easier to describe. A striped green, yellow, white and black short sleeve, layered with a 1992 long sleeve white shirt underneath.
He’s rocking trainers and two gold chains too.
They both look fly AF.
Actor and comedian Jim Carrey thought so too- who starred in the show ” In living color” nearly two decades ago!
“Great song, beautiful memories,” he said.
The dance choreography was wonderfully done, Bruno Mars moves likes Michael, and does so with ease. Is there anything this guy can’t do?
Drop top Porsche (Porsche), Rollie’ on my wrist (wrist)
Diamonds up and down my chain (aha)
Cardi B, straight stuntin’, can’t tell me nothin’
Bossed up and I changed the game (you see me?)
It’s my big Bronx boogie, got all them girls shook (shook)
My big, fat ass got all them boys hooked (hooked)
I went from dollar bills, now we poppin’ rubber bands (ha)
Bruno sang to me, while I do my money dance like ayy
Flexin’ on the ‘Gram like ayy
Hit the Lil’ Jon, okay (okay), okay (okay)
Oh yeah, we drippin’ in finesse and getting paid, ow
you gotta love the alliteration on that first line ” Drop Top Porsche”- smooth as hell.
Cardi basically changes the meaning of the song with her verse. Originally Bruno was singing about how good he and his girl looked together. Cardi’s vibe is about her new found fame and fortune.
And it’s true- she is totally a star, and that star power rocketed Finesse to #1. Interestingly when the song originally came out, it didn’t really catch on ( it was barely on the radio!)
Cardi changed that shit in a heartbeat.
And if history repeats itself, she’ll most likely be making big changes to the industry in 2018.
We’re looking forward to it.
