It all started when a nerdy white man on Jeopardy attempted to answer the statement-  A song by Coolio from “dangerous minds” goes back in time to become a 1667  John Milton classic:

The answer is of course- “Gangsta’s Paradise”

But that’s not what this dude said. He pronounced it “Gangster’s paradise”, and forever sealed his fate as a hopelessly silly honkey that will be mercilessly laughed at by the Hip-hop community for decades and centuries to come.

But then Jimmy Kimmel and Coolio decided to team up, and prevent a tragedy like this from ever happening again.

Cue a video of Coolio teaching 3 particularly geeky looking middle-aged white guys how to pronounce hip-hop words.

Hilarity ensued as they attempted words  like

Florida ( Flo-Rye-Da)

Bitch ( Bee-yatch)

Thing ( Thang)

Motherfucker ( Muh-fucka)

To white people reading this-  don’t you dare pronounce Will.I.Am as “William”.

Surprisingly, the students caught on pretty quick.

When one of his white proteges attempted to rap a bar, Coolio complimented him- saying “that’s tight”.

The guy’s response was priceless.

“tttt…Tight? Is tight good?”

Coolio smirks. “Verrrrry good”.

As you might have expected, not everyone thought this sketch was very funny. Here’s some of the reactions on YouTube.

the basic outcry from these people is “oh wow, if the roles were reversed and the video featured a white guy teaching 3 black people how to speak proper English, no one would think it was funny”.

And yeah, they would be correct. There’s nothing funny about a white guy teaching three grown ass black men how to properly speak their own first language. That’s just sad for everyone involved.

However, this is comedy.

It’s. A. Joke.

Everyone knows ( or should know) that your knowledge of Hip-Hop pronunciation isn’t any indication of your intelligence or probability of success in life.

Unless of course, you’re trying to be a rapper.

No one would expect these geeky white guys ( who look like they’re employed as accountants) to have the same charisma and style as a rapper like Coolio.

So the fact they are trying to learn is hilarious- because it’s just so freakin’ weird.

I’m not even sure that I would call the people who find this offensive “PC” or “Social Justice” warriors. Reason being,  social justice warriors are known to hate on white heterosexual men with professional careers- and the men depicted in this video pretty much fit that description.

This is more like…. butt hurt white conservatives who totally missed the point of the sketch.

And also, they can quit acting like comedians don’t make fun of ghetto black cultural stereotypes. Ever watched the Chappelle show?

In the episode “The Mad Real World”,  Chapelle makes all the black characters in the sketch look like complete degenerates.

They’re foul-mouthed. They smoke weed constantly. They open a “juice bar” in the city, and force their white roommate to do all the work while they gamble and get drunk on the job.

Chapelle isn’t making fun of black people in this sketch.

He’s poking fun at aggressive black gang bangers from the hood, and what it would be like if you threw a timid,  suburban white dude into the mix.

And the result is hilarious.

People aren’t just “black” or “white”- or any race for that matter. Humanity is a lot more complicated than that.

Humans are defined by the culture in which they belong, and their own individual personalities.

The moment we get that concept,  the closer we’ll be to having a good laugh.

We could all use one.
