Yesterday, “Drill” rap pioneer Fredo Santana unexpectedly passed away from a seizure.
Known for hits like “I Need More” and “Jealous”, the 27-year-old Chicago native rapper was found dead in his Los Angeles home.
Last October Santana was in the hospital for kidney and liver failure. He posted about his experience on IG, saying
“Been in here since Friday doctor say a ni**a had kidney failure an liver failure. Thanks for everyone who prayed for a ni**a I wouldn’t wish this on my worse enemy.”
Fans speculate that his kidney and liver failure- as well as his fatal seizure, came from his excessive consumption of “lean”.
If you’ve been listening to Hip Hop for more than 5 minutes, you probably don’t need someone to explain what lean is to you- but just in case:
“Lean” is a drink mixture comprised of a codeine and promethazine based cough syrup, sprite, and of course- jolly ranchers.
When taken, the drug first makes you feel incredibly sleepy. If you can fight the urge to sleep, users describe the feeling as “choppy” and “slowed down”. Your breathing becomes slow and shallow and you feel an intense relaxation and euphoria.
Many people that die from opiate overdoses literally die from relaxation, as in- they get so relaxed that they stop breathing.
There’s no current estimation of how many lives lean or “sizzurp” has taken, but we do know this. Out of the 62,000 deaths from drug overdoses in 2017- the majority were opiates, specifically LEGAL pain management medications like codeine.
Lean is heavily promoted in the Hip Hop community from acts like Future, UGK, Juicy J, Lil Wayne and Lil Pump.
In fact, an entire subgenre of rap, known as “screw music” can basically be credited to purple drank.
Fellow Chicago Drill rapper ” Rico Recklezz” paid a tribute to Fredo- clearly shocked at the rappers passing.
Many other rappers including Lil Durk, Maxo Kream, A$AP Nast, Retch, Young Chop, Mozzy, Fat Trel, Lil Pump, Trippie Red and Drake posted their condolences on IG.
His passing is extremely saddening, and will hopefully serve as yet another reminder to the Hip Hop community that “Lean” is no joke- it’s simply not to be fucked with, and not a way to escape your problems.
Fredo said it himself best.
“I was running from my old life tryna get high didn’t want to face them demons”
Here’s the last video the rapper ever took of himself- recorded hours before his death.
In the video, Santana puffs on a blunt and rocks out to some music- and the weird thing is, he looks completely fine.
His death at 27 adds another name to the list of the notorious “27 club” which consists of celebrities that have mysteriously died at 27 years of age.
Notable member include Kurt Kobain, Amy Winehouse, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, and Janice Joplin.
R.I.P Fredo Santana. We’re going to miss you.
