Perhaps everyone in the music industry knows the Veteran L.A Reid whose original name is Antonio Marquis Reid. He’s been in the music industry helping and launching remarkable talent for nearly five decades. And now, Reid is reportedly stepping down from his role as Epic Records’ Chairman. There are limited resources sharing details as to what made him take this decision and why.
As far as Epic Records and the parent company Sony is concerned, both media and public are waiting for their comments. There’s nothing on their social handles that we could relate to with such a huge change in the music company. However, Reid did come up with a tweet. On 11th May, he tweeted, “Never confuse a single defeat with a final defeat.” It may or may not be linked to what we have witnessed, but there’s no logical reference so far.
Surprisingly, his name as an executive producer is still listed in the scripted drama, Cotton Club. That indicates L.A Reid took a calculated decision and he’s quite a few step ahead in making his next move.
L.A Reid’s Tenure As the Chairman
In his tenure of six years at the Sony Music label, L.A. Reid has launched some pop artists who went on to become big names of the music world. These include:
⦁ Meghan Trainor
⦁ Popular rappers Travis Scott and Future,
⦁ A female group called Fifth Harmony, and
⦁ DJ Khaled, a mega-producer of this era.
Some of these artists have been putting together their new music albums that are soon to be released by Epic Records. Earlier this year, Future came up with two successful albums under this label.
Apart from them, L.A Reid brought back famous female singer Mariah Carey to the Sony Music family. He had worked with Mariah at Island Def Jam as a CEO of the music label. Moreover, the credit of making Rick Ross sing also goes to Reid.
A Little Background
Antonio Marquis “L.A” Reid began his music journey from his hometown in Cincinnati. He started off as a drummer in the local R&B band called The Deelee. After some time he relocated to Atlanta where he, along with his fellow band member Kenneth Edmonds A.K.A Babyface, established the LaFace Records imprint under the Arista Umbrella. In his new establishment, Reid has helped then new artists Usher, Pink and Outkast mastermind their careers to become superstars of their era. LaFace merged with Arista in the year 2000, and Reid became the CEO of the new venture.
There hasn’t been any news indicating who’s going to replace Reid as the new chairman of Epic Records. And there hasn’t been any indication as to which company would hire the veteran music industry exec. For those who’re aware of Reid’s tell-all memoir Sing To Me, he’s reportedly looking forward to transform his memoir into a movie.
