Cardi B “Minorities Run America”

Recently Cardi B gave a very in depth interview to I-D magazine. She talked about her life growing up, her rapid ascent to fame, and what it’s like being a minority during the Trump presidency.

Her answers on the last part may shock you. Or maybe they won’t. After all, we can we expect Cardi B to say- except exactly what is on her mind?

She explains that when she got her first number 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100- it not only empowered people of color, but also threatened white people.

“Of course the success of people like me scares people, that’s why they belittle us,” says Cardi. “If you’re a little scrawny man raised in a trailer in Alabama somewhere, of course you’re scared right now. That’s why they own guns! They’re scared of the intelligence of the minority. They scared of that shit”.

You know what though- let’s be honest. The chunky rednecks are probably shitting their pants as well.

Cardi continues…

“In America, I always look at the charts. Hip-hop is always there. We are controlling the music industry. We control the fashion world,” she says, “I don’t give a fuck if the fashion comes from a runway or if a Caucasian woman is walking it, once a coloured person wears something, that’s when everybody wants to wear it. We always influence. When you see the Olympics, who always wins? Coloured folks. We win everything. We are a big influence and people want to take that shit away”.

Let’s unpack those statements.

Last year, HipHop passed up Rock, becoming the most popular genre in the music industry. It’s responsible for 24.5% of music consumed and is only growing.

But what about fashion? Go to any affluent suburban high school in a metro area like Chicago  ( filled to the fuckin’ brim with white kids) and you’ll see a lot of this:

Look at how Justin Bieber dresses.

the fact is, these styles undoubtedly originate  from urban environments. It’s not exactly a secret that affluent white teens and young adults in metro areas want to dress like people of color. And why wouldn’t they?  the style is on point.

And how about the Olympics? Shit how about the NFL and NBA? ( 70% and 75% black respectively). Even Ray Charles can see that sports are dominated by people of color.

Obviously, none of this means that there aren’t still racist people out there, but honestly that shouldn’t be a shock to you.

Cardi knows that powerful politicians in our government  might try to belittle her, but it’s not going to work.

“People like Donald Trump, they’re always going to make us feel like we’re less. But it’s okay, because a bitch like me knows the truth. It don’t matter if the government and the Republicans try to make us feel like we’re not, cos we is. I know the truth.” What is the truth? “That we run the shit! We influence. We run everything.”

So what do you think? Did Cardi B hit the nail on the head? Or has her celebrity status put her out of touch with what the average person of color goes through?

One thing’s for sure- America is going to be talking about this.
