On the second verse offset’s lyrics on”Boss Life” Offset raps
Pinky ring crystal clear, 40k spent on a private Lear
60k solitaire (60 ball)
I cannot vibe with queers (uh-uh)
I got the heart of a bear (huh)
No not the part about his pinky ring, and probably not the part about him having the heart of a bear either.
Obviously, what people are enraged about is his use of the word “Queers” which has a derogatory meaning within the LGBTQ community.
Recently YFN Lucci released “Boss Life”, which features Offset from Migos. The beat is dope, the hook is catchy, and the music video is pretty entertaining- although a little racist.
You’ll see hot Japanese chicks waving hand fans and laid naked on top of a table covered in sushi. You’ll also see dragons and ninjas- because you know, every Japanese person is also secretly a ninja.
But nobody cares about that ( sorry Japanse people).
According to Offset- he had no malice towards gay people, and wasn’t referring to them when he said “Queer”.
“When I wrote that I was thinking of words that could rhyme with the others (here, lear, solitaire, bear) and I saw this definition about her having a queer feeling she was being watched and it fit what I was thinking about a stalker creepy paparazzi situation. To me that “queer” I don’t mean someone who’s gay. I mean lame people who film you, post it and stalk you. Lingo that means strange or odd…
And to Offset’s credit, he’s right. Queer does mean strange, or odd.
When Offset is talking about “her having a queer feeling”, he’s literally talking about the example sentence that pops up when you Google the definition of “queer”.
But how on EARTH would the listener of the song know that? There’s nothing in the lyrics that would even remotely suggest that Offset is referring to “Paparazzis” ( people who take pictures of celebs without their permission) when he says “Queers”.
So already, his excuse seems like a giant stretch. But to cast further doubt, Migos had two events last year in which they reportedly behaved in a homophobic manner.
- When asked by Rolling Stone writer Jonah Weiner about rapper “ilovemakonnen” coming out as gay and the wave of positive support he is receiving, Offset responded saying “That’s because the world is fucked up”. He and Migos explained that it was odd for a trap rapper to be gay, and that he shouldn’t be in that genre given his sexuality.
- Migos reportedly refused to perform with Drag Queens ( men dressed as women) on Katy Perry’s SNL appearance.
So at some point, you gotta assume Cardi B is going to comment on this situation.
She just did.
“I’m not going to let somebody call him ‘homophobic’ when I know that he’s not, and I’m saying this because I seen him around these…around gays, and he treats them with the same respect he treats everybody. He never acts uncomfortable and he just don’t care.”
So yeah, the gay community is pretty pissed right now.
Whether this controversy will actually have an effect on Offset’s career- or simply blow over- has yet to be seen.
